Sodium nitrate is a colorless trigonal crystal or rhombic crystal or a white fine crystalline powder. Odorless, salty, slightly bitter. Easily deliquescent, soluble in water and liquid ammonia, soluble in ethanol, methanol, and slightly soluble in glycerol and acetone. It is easy to burn and explode in contact with organic matter and sulfur.

In the glass industry, it is used as a defoaming agent, decoloring agent, clarifying agent and oxidizing flux.
