Sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) is an inorganic salt produced by the combination of nitrite ions and sodium ions. Sodium nitrite is easily delixable, easily soluble in water and liquid ammonia, its aqueous solution is alkaline, its pH is about 9, slightly soluble in ethanol, methanol, and other organic solvents. Sodium nitrite reacts with oxygen to form sodium nitrate when exposed to air. It is an oxidizing corrosion inhibitor, suitable for low hardness or ultra-low hardness water treatment.
