Sodium nitrite is a white to light yellow granule, rod or powder. It is hygroscopic. Decompose when heated above 320℃. Slowly oxidized to sodium nitrate in air. It meets weak acid decomposition to release brown nitrogen oxide gas. Sodium nitrite is slightly soluble in ethanol. The aqueous solution is alkaline, pH of about 9. The relative density of sodium nitrite is 2.17. The melting point is 271℃. It has an oxidizing property, can burn and explode in contact with organic matter, and release toxic and irritating nitrogen peroxide and nitrogen oxide gas.

Sodium nitrite can be used:
1. Mordants for fabric dyeing.
2. Bleaching agents for silk and linen.
3. Metal heat treatment agents, steel corrosion inhibitor.
4. Antidote for cyanide poisoning.
5. Laboratory analytical reagents.
6. It is also used in the production of potassium nitrite, azo dyes, etc.
Storage and transportation of sodium nitrite:
Sodium nitrite should be placed in a low temperature, dry, ventilated warehouse. Doors and windows should be tightly closed to prevent direct sunlight. It can be stored in the same warehouse with other nitrates except ammonium nitrate, but it can be stored in isolation from organic materials, flammable materials and reducing agents, and isolated from fire sources.
Temperature and humidity management: Strictly control the temperature in hot season, the storehouse can take the method of sealing the storehouse, try to keep the storehouse as dry as possible, and natural ventilation can be used in dry season. The temperature inside the warehouse is below 30℃ and the relative humidity is below 75%.
Safe operation: the operator must wear overalls and gloves; the operation must be carried out gently and put down lightly, and it is forbidden to rub and drop, throw, hit and roll; all acceptance inspection operations should not be carried out in the warehouse, and should be carried out in the designated place.
Transportation precautions: Transportation of separate shipments, the transportation process to ensure that the container does not leak, does not collapse, does not fall, not damaged. Vehicles should be equipped with the corresponding varieties and quantities of firefighting equipment during transportation. It is strictly prohibited to mix and transport with acid, flammable materials, organic materials, reducing agents, spontaneous combustion materials, and flammable materials in contact with moisture. Transportation speed should not be too fast, should not be forced to overtake. Before and after loading and unloading the vehicle, it should be thoroughly cleaned and washed, and it is strictly prohibited to mix organic matter, flammable matter and other impurities.
