Sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) is an inorganic salt formed by the combination of nitrite ions and sodium ions. Sodium nitrite is easily deliquescent, soluble in water and liquid ammonia, and its aqueous solution is alkaline. When exposed to air, sodium nitrite reacts with oxygen to form sodium nitrate. When heated above 320°C, it will decompose and generate oxygen, nitrogen oxide and sodium oxide. Combustible and explosive in contact with organic matter.

1. Sodium nitrite can be used as a dye for plant dyeing. Some silks and linens use sodium nitrite as a bleaching agent, and can act as a corrosion inhibitor for steel.
2. Sodium nitrite is also used as a colorant, preservative, etc. in the processing of meat products.
3. Because sodium nitrite exhibits an alkaline reaction and reacts with oxygen in the air, it can be used for rust prevention of steel plates.
