The chemical formula of sodium nitrite is NaNO2, which is a colorless or yellow crystal, with a relative density of 2.168 (0°C), a melting point of 271°C, and it decomposes at 320°C. It is easily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is alkaline due to the hydrolysis of nitrite. Sodium nitrite has both oxidizing properties and reducing properties, mainly oxidizing. It is mainly oxidizing in acidic solutions, and reductive in alkaline solutions or when encountering strong oxidants.
