Sodium nitrite is white to light yellow granules, bars, or powder. Hygroscopic. Decomposed when heated to 320 °C or above. Slowly oxidize to sodium nitrate in the air. Released brown nitrous oxide gas in weak acid. Soluble in 1.5 times cold water and 0.6 times boiling water, slightly soluble in ethanol. The aqueous solution is alkaline with a pH of about 9. Relative density 2.17. Melting point is 270 ℃. It is oxidizing, burns and explodes in contact with organic matter, and emits poisonous and irritating gases of nitrogen peroxide and nitrogen oxide.
Sodium nitrite mainly used in the manufacture of nitro compounds, azo dyes, mordant for fabric dyeing, bleach, metal thermal
treatment agent and pharmaceutical industry.

Sodium nitrite is a bleaching agent for silk and flax, a metal heat treatment agent, a steel corrosion inhibitor, an antidote for cyanide poisoning, a laboratory analysis agent, and a hair color agent, an anti microbial agent, and a preservative in the processing of meat products. It is widely used in bleaching, electroplating and metal treatment.
Sodium nitrite should be placed in low temperature, dry and ventilated warehouse. The doors and windows shall be tight to prevent direct sunlight. It shall be stored in isolation from organic matter, inflammable matter and reducing agent, and isolated from fire source.
