Calcium chloride dihydrate is a colorless crystal. The general commercial products are white, off-white or slightly yellow crystals, which are bitter and astringent, and have strong deliquescent properties. The relative density is 1.835. Easily soluble in water, and its aqueous solution is Chemicalbook neutral or slightly alkaline and corrosive. Soluble in alcohol. When heated to 260°C, dehydration becomes anhydrous. Calcium chloride dihydrate can be used as a multi-purpose desiccant. Its aqueous solution is an important refrigerant for refrigerating mills and ice making.
