Calcium chloride dihydrate is a white, off-white or slightly yellow flake or block solid with bitter and astringent taste. It is easily soluble in water and emits a lot of heat at the same time, and its aqueous solution is slightly alkaline. Soluble in alcohol, acetone and acetic acid. It reacts with ammonia or ethanol to generate CaCl28NH3 and CaCl24C2H5OH complexes respectively. At low temperatures, the solution crystallizes and precipitates as hexahydrate. When gradually heated to 30℃, it will dissolve in its own crystal water. Continue heating and gradually lose water. When it reaches 200℃, it will become dihydrate. When heated to 260℃, it will become White porous anhydrous calcium chloride.
Calcium chloride dihydrate is produced from the distillation waste liquid (containing 100g/L of calcium chloride) in the production of soda ash by the ammonia-soda method. After purification, clarification, evaporation, and separation of sodium chloride, the mother liquor is clarified and continues to be concentrated. When the content reaches 70%, it is prepared by cooling. It can also be prepared by the reaction of hydrochloric acid and limestone powder.

Calcium chloride dihydrate is used as a refrigerant, antifreeze, fire extinguishing agent, used for melting ice and snow, making anhydrous calcium chloride, flame retardant for cotton fabrics, and coagulant for rubber production. It can accelerate the hardening of concrete and increase the cold resistance of construction mortar. It is also used as an anti-fogging agent in ports and a dust collector on roads. From industrial grade calcium chloride dihydrate saturated solution, adding decolorizing agent, removing heavy metal agent, removing arsenic agent for solution purification, filtering to remove impurities, filtrate cooling and crystallization, solid-liquid separation, and drying can be used to prepare food-grade products. Used as a coagulant for canned food and soy products, and a calcium fortifier.
