Paraformaldehyde is a white crystalline powder formed by the polymerization of formaldehyde, with the pungent smell of formaldehyde. Its chemical formula can be expressed as (CH₂O)ₙ (n is usually 8-100). It releases formaldehyde slowly at room temperature and decomposes even faster when heated. It is soluble in hot water, alcohols and strong alkaline solutions, but insoluble in organic solvents.
