Ammonium Sulfate (NH4)2SO4 Used As An Excellent Nitrogen Fertiliser
Ammonium sulphate, abbreviated as ammonium sulphate, also known as ammonium sulphate, chemical formula (NH4)2SO4, colourless rhombohedral crystals, soluble in water, aqueous solution is acidic. Ammonium sulphate is a kind of nitrogen fertiliser, but it has to be applied with lime on strongly acidic soil, and in soil with strong reaction to lime, it has to be applied deeply and mulched to reduce the loss of nitrogen; it can also be used as soldering flux and fireproofing agent for fabrics. Its nitrogen content is about 20%-21%, and it contains 24% sulphur, which is suitable for sulphur-deficient soils and a variety of crops. It has good water solubility and fast fertiliser effect, and is widely used in agricultural production.

1. Ammonium sulfate is an excellent nitrogen fertilizer (commonly known as fertilizer powder), suitable for general soil and crops. It can promote vigorous growth of branches and leaves, improve fruit quality and yield, and enhance crops' resistance to disasters. It can be used as base fertilizer, top dressing and seed fertilizer.
2. Ammonium can undergo a double decomposition reaction with table salt to produce ammonium chloride, react with aluminum sulfate to form ammonium alum, and together with boric acid and others, be used to manufacture refractory materials. Adding it to the electroplating solution can increase the conductivity. It is also a catalyst for the color of food sauce, a nitrogen source for cultivating yeast in the production of fresh yeast, a dyeing assistant for acid dyes, and a deashing agent for leather.
3. In addition, it is also used in beer brewing, the production of chemical reagents and storage batteries, etc. Another important function is the mining of rare earths. Ammonium sulfate is used as the raw material for mining. The rare earth elements in the ore soil are exchanged through ion exchange. Then, the leach is collected, impurities are removed, and after sedimentation, pressing and calcination, the rare earth raw ore is obtained. About 5 tons of ammonium sulfate are needed to produce 1 ton of rare earth raw ore.
4. It also has many biological applications, mostly in protein purification processes. As ammonium sulfate is an inert substance, it is not prone to react with other bioactive substances, which can protect protein activity to the greatest extent during the purification process. Additionally, ammonium sulfate has excellent solubility and can create a high-salt environment, preparing for protein precipitation and subsequent high-salt purification.
