Sodium chloride (chemical formula: NaCl), commonly known as table salt and salt, is an ionic compound. The atomic masses of the sodium and chloride ions are 22.99 and 35.45 g/mol, respectively, meaning that 100 g of sodium chloride contains 39.34 g of sodium and 60.66 g of chloride.

Sodium chloride is the main component of table salt and rock salt, which is an ionic compound, colorless and transparent cubic crystal. Sodium chloride exists in large quantities in seawater and natural salt lakes, and can be used to produce chlorine, hydrogen, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, chlorate, hypochlorite, bleach and sodium metal, etc., and is an important chemical raw material.

Industries that require a huge amount of industrial salt include the chemical industry, the dye industry, the metallurgical industry, the building materials industry, the machinery industry, etc.

1. Application in the chemical industry

The chemical industry is a fundamental industry of the national economy. The three acids (sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid) and two bases (soda ash and caustic soda) are the basic chemical industries. Among them, hydrochloric acid, soda ash, and caustic soda are mainly produced from salt. For every ton of soda ash or caustic soda produced, 1.2 to 1.4 tons of raw salt are consumed. The salt used worldwide for the production of over 80 basic chemical products such as sodium alkali, chlorine, and chlorine derivatives. Chemical salt accounts for more than 60% of the world's total salt consumption. In industrialized developed countries, chemical salt generally accounts for more than 90% of the total salt consumption. Therefore, it can be said that the all-round development of the national economy depends on a developed chemical industry, and a developed chemical industry in turn depends on a developed salt-making industry.

2. Application in the metallurgical industry
Salt is used in the metallurgical industry as a chlorination roasting agent and quenching agent, and also as a desulfurizer and clarifying agent for treating metal ores.

3. Application in the machinery industry
During casting, salt can be used as an excellent binder for molding sand in the casting of non-ferrous metals and alloys. At high temperatures, salt softens the core of the casting, thereby preventing the formation of hot cracks in the casting.

4. Application in the dye industry
The commonly used raw materials in the dye industry, such as caustic soda, soda ash and chlorine gas, are directly produced from salt as raw materials, while hydrochloric acid, sodium sulfide and sodium hyposulfite are chemical products obtained through deep processing of salt.

5. Application in the building materials industry

Soda ash made from salt is the main raw material for the production of glass.
