Sodium chloride is an inorganic ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl. It is a colorless cubic crystal or fine crystalline powder with a salty taste. It has a white crystalline appearance and its main source is seawater. It is the main component of table salt. It is easily soluble in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol (alcohol) and liquid ammonia; it is insoluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Impure sodium chloride is deliquescent in the air. It has good stability and its aqueous solution is neutral. In industry, the electrolysis of saturated sodium chloride solution is generally used to produce hydrogen, chlorine, caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and other chemical products (generally known as the chlor-alkali industry). It can also be used for ore smelting (electrolysis of molten sodium chloride crystals to produce active metallic sodium), used in medicine to prepare physiological saline, and used as a condiment in daily life.
