Urotropine/Hexamine, also known as hexamethylenetetramine, is a polycyclic heterocyclic compound with a similar structure to adamantane, and the molecular formula is C6H12N4. Urotropine is a white crystal, which can be prepared by the reaction of formaldehyde and ammonia, and the molecule contains four triazacyclohexane rings fused to each other. Limited soluble in water, easily soluble in most organic solvents.
Urotropine/Hexamine has a wide range of applications. It can be used as raw materials for organic synthesis, analytical chemical reagents, antibiotics, fuels, and also has many uses in chemical production. Urotropine reacts with fuming nitric acid to form RDX, a highly explosive "cyclone explosive".
