Paraformaldehyde, a polymer of formaldehyde, generally has a structure length of eight to one hundred units. Long-chain paraformaldehyde is commonly used in heat-resistant plastics, also known as polyoxymethylene plastics. Paraformaldehyde decomposes quickly and releases slightly odorous formaldehyde. Paraformaldehyde can be used for fumigation, disinfection and sterilization, and it can also be used to prepare pure formaldehyde. Storage of formaldehyde solution at low temperature will slowly generate paraformaldehyde, which will precipitate out as white insoluble matter.
