TA'ZIZ Spends $1.7 Billion on First Methanol Plant in UAE
On February 3, TA'ZIZ, jointly established by the UAE energy giant Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and local sovereign investment institution ADQ, announced that it would invest $1.7 billion to build the UAE's first methanol plant.
This world-class methanol plant is located in Al Ruwais Industrial City in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and is scheduled to be completed in 2028.
Samsung E&A was awarded the EPC contract as the general contractor. Upon completion, the project will be the first methanol production site in the UAE, powered by clean energy, with an annual production capacity of 1.8 million tons of methanol and one of the most energy-efficient methanol plants in the world.
The project is the first step for TA'ZIZ to create a world-class chemical complex in the Al Dhafra region. In the initial stage, the goal of annual production of 4.7 million tons of chemicals, including methanol, low-carbon ammonia, polyvinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda, will be achieved by 2028. Several of these chemicals will be produced in the UAE for the first time.
