Anhydrous calcium chloride has an unpleasant smell because it contains high impurities, especially calcium chloride made of calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid, because the by-product acid will have organic impurities or the final adjustment of pH is not enough, there may be hydrochloric acid. And the smell of chlorine will cause calcium chloride to have a heavier pungent odor.
When buying anhydrous calcium chloride, I don’t know how to distinguish the quality of anhydrous calcium chloride. In fact, there are many ways to judge the quality of anhydrous calcium chloride. The following is the most commonly used identification method. Although impurities such as sodium chloride, calcium sulfate and potassium chloride are easily soluble in water, due to the co-ion effect of anhydrous calcium chloride, the solubility of these salts in high-concentration calcium chloride solution is very small. When the calcium concentration is very high, these salts are almost insoluble, so it is enough to observe the precipitation after dissolving in 1:1 water. The more insolubles, the lower the purity. High-purity calcium chloride has no insolubles.
Premium Grade Calcium Chloride Anhydrous: The particles are white, and the aqueous solution is clear after standing.
Qualified Grade Calcium Chloride Anhydrous: The particles are yellowish, the aqueous solution is yellowish and turbid.
