The industrial methods for preparing solid anhydrous ferric chloride include Chlorination Method and Titanium Tetrachloride By-product Method.
1. Chlorination Method: Uses waste iron wire or iron flakes as raw materials, and reacts with chlorine gas flowing upstream in the reaction furnace to obtain anhydrous FeCl3.
2Fe + 3Cl2==2FeCl3
The reaction is exothermic. If the temperature is too high, the product will be partially decomposed to form FeCl2 and Cl2, which reduces the yield and purity of the product. Therefore, the excess heat in the reaction should be taken away by circulating cooling water in the technological process. FeCl3 vapor is discharged from the top of the furnace and condensed to obtain FeCl3.
2. Titanium Tetrachloride By-product Method: FeCl3 can be prepared by using the by-product solid during the production of titanium tetrachloride as raw material. However, the purity of the product obtained by this method is poor.
