Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a linear polymer with the chemical formula (C3H5NO)n. It is a hard glassy solid at room temperature. The products include glue, latex and white powder, translucent beads and flakes. Good thermal stability. It can be dissolved in water in any proportion, and the aqueous solution is a uniform and transparent liquid. After long-term storage, the viscosity of the solution will decrease due to the slow degradation of the polymer, especially when the storage and transportation conditions are poor. Polyacrylamide is used as a lubricant, suspending agent, clay stabilizer, oil-displacing agent, fluid loss agent and thickening agent, and is used in drilling, acidification, fracturing, water plugging, cementing, secondary oil recovery, and tertiary oil recovery. Widely used, it is an extremely important oil field chemical.

1. Flocculation: PAM can make suspended substances through electric neutralization, bridge adsorption, and flocculation.
2. Adhesion: it can play a role of adhesion through mechanical, physical and chemical actions.
3. Resistance reduction: PAM can effectively reduce the friction resistance of the fluid, and adding a small amount of PAM in water can reduce the resistance by 50-80%.
4. Thickening agent: PAM has thickening effect under neutral and acidic conditions, and PAM is easy to hydrolyze when PH value is over 5.When the structure is semi-reticular, the thickening will be more obvious.
